Āyurveda: The Science of Life and Holistic Health
Āyurveda, possibly the longest, continually practiced medical system, derives its name from the combination of two words: Āyu, meaning life, and Veda, signifying science or knowledge. Essentially, Āyurveda is the science of life—an intricate understanding of the interplay between the body, soul, mind, and senses that constitute our lifespan. It encapsulates a comprehensive knowledge of both preventive and curative aspects of health, safeguarding the integrity of the chain that forms our being—body, soul, mind, and senses. Recognizing and comprehending the components of one’s life are crucial for enhancing the quality and quantity of lifespan, making Āyurveda an invaluable tool for enriching one’s life and attaining longevity.
Āyurvedic Treatments and Formulations
Āyurvedic treatments aim to restore and maintain equilibrium (homeostasis) in the body, ensuring that the doshas, tissues, and bodily systems function harmoniously. Preventative treatment is based on early intervention, removing the incoming causative factors, enforcing a personalized diet plan and lifestyle habits, and addressing subtle signs and symptoms before they develop into diagnosable diseases. Treatment of disease can take on many forms and will vary depending on the severity and chronicity of the disease process. In all treatments, whether health promotion, preventative health, or disease management, diet and lifestyle modification will be the leading interventions. The incoming causative factors for disease and bodily dysfunction must first be identified, reduced, and/or eliminated before or alongside taking further action. First, plug the leak on a sinking boat before trying to remove the water on board.

With 17 years of experience in healthcare, I’ve journeyed from the bedside as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to a Registered Nurse (RN), and most recently, to becoming a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) after graduating in December.
My career has been a tapestry of learning, one that now includes certifications in health and wellness coaching, lifestyle medicine, and the completion of a 1-year intensive Ayurvedic health coaching program. This diverse path has allowed me to recognize both the strengths and limitations of Western and Eastern medicine, each holding a piece of the puzzle.
